Although we often take them for granted, windows really are more important than we ever realise. They are, quite literally, our window on the world and provide us with natural light and sense of belonging to the environment around us. They show us our place in the world.

Google Office Cafe, San Francisco, USA

If you’re one of the world’s most influential companies, you can certainly afford to have a cafe with a stunning view. Google’s San Francisco office is situated on the edge of the city’s Financial District, overlooking Treasure Island, Alcatraz and the stunning Oakland Bay Bridge, offering this impressive view.

Toilet, Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania

Thousands of trekkers take on Africa’s highest summit each year. At 19,341 feet (5,895 metres) above sea level, Mount Kilimanjaro requires a full week of walking and acclimitisation to altitude. In fact, despite lying so close to the equator, you will sometimes find the mountain top covered in snow, making your choice of clothing a difficult one!

The toilet situation on the mountain may be rudimentary at best, but the stunning views very much make up for it!

Toilet, The Shard, London, UK

From the basic to the beautiful. If you fancy answering a call of nature when visiting The Shard in London, you’d better have a head for heights. This vertigo-inducing public convenience is situated on the 68th floor, at 800 feet, and features a wall to ceiling window. Well, at the end of the day, as the UK’s tallest building, the only things you need privacy from are passing helicopters!

Penthouse Suite, Las Vegas, USA

The one and only sin city, where thousands flock each year to let their hair down and open their wallets. There have been many films set in Las Vegas, including Ocean’s Eleven and its sequels, The Hangover and Rain Man, to name just a few. And, if these films have taught us anything, it’s that the Penthouse suites at the top of these skyscraper-esque casinos have the very best views of the strip, just like this one below at the world famous Mirage.

Poseidon Undersea Resort, Fiji

Sleeping with the fishes takes on a whole new meaning at this magical underwater hotel. Located in the stunning Fiji islands and surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, each bedroom offers a truly unique view into life under the sea. But at £9,000 per week, it’s certainly not a place for cheap skates!

 

International Space Station, circling the Earth

For a window view that is out of this world, you literally have to go “out of this world”. Major Tim Peake became the first British European Space Agency Astronaut to visit the International Space Station, and with it became famous in his own right. As a proud Brit, he even took a few holiday snaps of his home as he passed overhead. Can you see your house from here?
